Imagine walking into a New York City bookstore and discovering that the love story on the shelves is your own.
That’s exactly what happened when Harpreet proposed to Mishika at a Bookstore in New York City. What she thought was an ordinary afternoon became a completely private proposal filled with handwritten memories, rose petals, music, a grand piano, flowers, candles and one final surprise from their family and friends.
Harpreet had one major advantage in pulling off this epic surprise proposal: Mishika believed he wasn’t even in the country.
She had absolutely no idea what was waiting for her.
Turning a NYC Bookstore Into Their Love Story
When Harpreet came to The Heart Bandits, he knew he wanted to propose to Mishika in a bookstore.
But this couldn’t happen in just any bookstore. We needed a beautiful New York City venue that could be made private, had enough space for the experience to unfold in several stages and, most importantly, could accommodate a grand piano.
After researching different options, we found the perfect setting. For one night, we transformed the space into something created entirely for Harpreet and Mishika.
The experience began the moment she arrived.

There Was Only One Name on the Guest List
Mishika arrived believing she was meeting a friend.
Instead, she was greeted by our coordinator and asked for her name.
There was a guest list waiting for her—but only one name was on it: Mishika’s.
From there, a trail of rose petals led her through the bookstore to her first message:
Find Your Story.
At the end of the path was a romantic reading area surrounded by flowers and candlelight. Waiting for her was a book Harpreet had created especially for her.

A Book He Had Been Writing for Months
This wasn’t a prop we created simply to make the proposal look beautiful.
Harpreet had been documenting his thoughts and feelings about Mishika for months. Those words became the beginning of a book she could sit down and read by herself as the proposal unfolded around her.
The remaining pages held another surprise that eventually told her that the rest of the story was something he wanted to tell her in person.
That was her cue to keep going.
Another trail of rose petals stretched deeper into the bookstore beneath the words:
Follow The Music.

He Was Waiting at the Piano
As Mishika made her way through the bookstore, the background music stopped.
Then she heard something else.
Harpreet was playing the piano.
She followed the music until she found him seated at a grand piano surrounded by flowers, photographs and candlelight.
The piano itself had been incorporated into the proposal design, and the path leading toward Harpreet was filled with memories from their relationship.

What had started with Harpreet’s words inside a book was now happening in front of her.
When the song ended, he stood, walked toward Mishika and got down on one knee.
She said yes.

Then Their Family Appeared
Harpreet wanted the actual marriage proposal to feel private, but he also wanted their family and friends to be part of the celebration.
So while Mishika had been making her way through the bookstore, approximately ten of their loved ones were secretly waiting upstairs where she couldn’t see them.

Even the photographer and videographer were positioned farther away during the proposal so Harpreet and Mishika could have the moment to themselves.
Once she said yes, their family came downstairs and surprised her.
What began as an intimate bookstore proposal suddenly became an engagement celebration with the people they loved most.

Behind This New York City Proposal
A proposal like this may look effortless when you see the finished photographs and video, but there were a lot of moving pieces happening behind the scenes.
The Heart Bandits helped Harpreet find the right private NYC proposal venue and then coordinated the details needed to bring his idea to life, including the venue layout, proposal design, florals and candles, grand piano, photography, videography, family surprise, timeline and the cues that allowed each part of the experience to unfold at exactly the right time.
That coordination mattered because Mishika wasn’t simply walking into a decorated room.
She was experiencing the proposal one surprise at a time.
Find Your Story.
Follow The Music.
Follow Your Heart.
And at the end of it all was Harpreet.
